The State Women & Child Welfare Department today took a key decision to increase the maximum age limit for promotion of helpers to Anganwadi teachers from 45 years to 50 years.
State Women & Child Welfare Minister Seethakka signed the relevant file, and the official orders on the matter will be issued soon.
Previously, helpers who crossed the age of 45 were ineligible for promotion. Following a request from the Anganwadi Helpers' Unions, Seethakka had directed officials to explore the feasibility of raising the age limit. The officials submitted a report confirming that there are no obstacles to promoting qualified helpers below 50 years of age. In light of the recent increase in the retirement age of Anganwadi teachers from 60 to 65 years, the officials suggested that even those promoted at age 50 could continue in service for another 15 years.
After thus being told that that there would be no issues in promoting eligible helpers above the age of 45, the minister approved the proposal.
There are about 4,322 Anganwadi helpers aged between 45 and 50 across the State, and they will thus now get another chance at career advancement with the decision providing an opportunity for them to be promoted as teachers.
Thousands of Anganwadi helpers across the State expressed their happiness over the decision and thanked the minister. They had earlier complained of losing promotion opportunities solely due to the age limit.
