Telangana has been adjudged the winner of the "National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2018" by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Telangana has been adjudged the winner of the "National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2018" by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The award is given in recognition of the services extended by the state government for the overall development of persons with disabilities.
The award will be presented in an official function by the ministry on December 3 at New Delhi, which will be attended by the President.
M Jagadeeswar, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government, Department for Women, Children, Disabled & Senior Citizens, and B Shailaja, Director & Commissioner, Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, met S K Joshi, Chief Secretary to the Telangana government, in his chambers and informed him about the award.
The Chief Secretary expressed immense satisfaction at the services offered by all departments for the empowerment of persons with disabilities that led to the national recognition, and expressed hope that the same would continue in the future with even more energy and enthusiasm. He also advised the departments to take up new innovative measures for the socio-economic development of persons with disabilities.
"The primary focus of Telangana has been to take appropriate measures for the prevention of disabilities, and early identification and early intervention. Besides this the respective departments focused on providing medical and non-medical interventions, therapies, distribution of free aids and appliances, and scholarships.
"Through vocational training and skill development, financial support for entrepreneurship, job opportunities in the private sector, pensions, marriage incentives etc. the state has adopted a multi-pronged approach to reach out to persons with disabilities," a government spokesperson said.
