The Joint Action Committee of Telangana teachers has decided to boycott their census work from February 17 to 21, to build pressure on the Central government to introduce a Bill on a separate Telangana in Parliament.
Led by MLC and Telangana Teachers' leader B Mohan Reddy, the TTJAC submitted a notice to Chief Secretary S V Prasad at the Secretariat regarding their non-cooperation movement.
The teachers have been drafted for work related to the census.
Later, representatives of 25 teachers' unions raised slogans in support of a separate Telangana. The teachers told media persons that they would boycott any work or meeting connected to the census operations, for 5 days.
Despite it being a national program they were compelled to take to this stir, the teachers said.
The leaders clarified that their protest or non-cooperation would not inconvenience students, as they would teach them for an extra hour in their respective schools.
Abolition of Clause 14 (1) (which allows for Hyderabad as a free zone for recruitment), the restoration of mulki rules for people from Telangana, the filling up vacant posts, and the abolition of the apprentice system in teachers' recruitment from 1 July 2008 as recommended by the PRC were some of their demands.
Pulla Ravinder, Punna Kumar, M Manipal Reddy, K Venugopal, P Yugandhar Reddy were among those who addressed the press.
