After a gap of 30 years, the Telugu Desam Party has bagged control of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) by a thumping majority.
It won 32 of the 48 wards, while the opposition YSR Congress Party won just ten seats. TDP's electoral ally BJP bagged three seats, and independents got another three.
Even before the counting of the votes was complete, it was clear that the TDP had bagged the mayor's position.
Elections to the Kakinada Municipal Corporation were held on August 29, and counting of votes took place today.
Profusely thanking the voters for electing the TDP candidates, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said that his party's landslide win in the elections was a vindication of the developmental efforts of his government.
Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said that elections could not be won with the help of political strategists (referring to Prashant Kishor, hired by the YSR Congress), but with honest intentions. He said that the people of Kakinada expressed trust in his government through the verdict, and that he would keep up his assurances.
He also lauded his party leaders for their coordinated efforts to win the elections.
"The leaders and cadre should mingle with the people and win their goodwill to win the elections," he said.
Kakinada, a port town, has been chosen to be made a Smart City under the Smart Cities Mission.
