In what is a reprieve to the two Telugu and other States from NEET, the Supreme Court today allowed various State governments to conduct their own entrance examinations for medical college seats.
After hearing the arguments of the Centre, the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Telangana government and Jammu & Kashmir on NEET, the apex court said that the different States could conduct their own common examinations. Students who could not appear for NEET during Phase I could appear for the second phase examination on July 24, the court said. The NEET would continue as usual and private colleges can opt for it, it stated.
The Solicitor General said that he would apprise the court of the opinions of other States after taking their proposals on Saturday and Sunday. Heeding the Centre's prayer, the apex court adjourned the case for hearing on May 9.
