Following persuasion by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Nandyal Congress MP S P Y Reddy, on Saturday, withdrew his decision to resign from Parliament in protest against the release of water for power generation from Srisailam "at the cost of farmers of Rayalaseema".
According to sources, the MP had taken this decision after meeting the Chief Minister at his office. Kiran Kumar Reddy had reportedly assured the MP that he would take all measures possible to protect the interests of farmers from the Rayalaseema region. He is also said to have explained that the water was released to meet drinking and irrigation needs in Srisailam Right Main Canal.
S P Y Reddy said that he had earlier protested against the government's move as it had released water for power generation even before the reservoir had attained the level of 854 ft, which is crucial for drawing water into the Srisailam Right Main Canal (SRMC). He said that he hoped that the water discharged from Almatti Dam would reach Srisailam in a few days and solve the irrigation needs of farmers in Nandyal. (INN)
