Expressing serious concern over the rising incidences of breast cancer, Telangana Women and Child Welfare Minister Seethakka today spoke about the need to raise public awareness about the disease.
She urged doctors to take the lead in cancer awareness programs, and called for concerted efforts to reduce the number of cases.
A breast cancer awareness campaign was held at Yashoda Hospital, Hitech City, Hyderabad, with the minister attending as the chief guest. The event was also attended by Mahila Corporation Chairperson Bandru Shobha, several doctors, medical staff and members of the public.
Speaking on the occasion, Seetakka said, "Breast cancer is having a significant impact on society. Early detection however makes prevention and treatment much easier. With the advanced medical facilities available today, there is no reason to feel that life ends with a cancer diagnosis. If physicians instill confidence in their patients, it is possible to overcome this challenge."
Seethakka also expressed her gratitude to Yashoda Hospitals for organising the awareness campaign, and said that such initiatives needed to be extended beyond urban centres to rural communities as well. She said that this approach was essential for the medical fraternity to truly fulfill its mission.
She also said that the Telangana government was organising health camps in villages through the Women and Child Welfare and the Health departments, with a special focus on women's health, including breast cancer screening tests.
"Healthcare professionals should actively support the government's awareness initiatives," she said.
