On the occasion of Dr B R Ambedkar's birth anniversary, the Telangana government today issued a Government Order (GO) authorising the categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SC) for reservation purposes, marking a step toward streamlining reservations for the SC community in the State.
The Cabinet sub-committee on SC categorisation, chaired by Vice Chairman and Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with members Damodar Rajanarasimha and Ponnam Prabhakar, met Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the Secretariat and handed over the first copy of the GO to him.
On the occasion, Revanth Reddy said that Telangana was the first State in India to implement this revolutionary decision on SC sub-categorisation.
Taking to X, the Chief Minister said, "We are all proud to have made history. On the auspicious birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Babasaheb Dr B R Ambedkar, the Telangana government has paid the best tribute by bringing into force a landmark Act of social justice, fulfilling a long-pending demand for the classification of SC sub-castes."
Addressing the media at the Secretariat, minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Raja Narasimha, said that Telangana was the first State to implement SC categorisation.
"All parties had earlier discussed SC categorisation in the Assembly, but none moved forward on it. After the Congress government came to power, it took decisive steps and expedited the process. Following the Supreme Court's verdict on SC categorisation, the State government formed a ministerial sub-committee, which received and studied thousands of representations, and finally implemented the proposal," Uttam Kumar Reddy said.
"From now on, SC categorisation will apply to notifications in education and employment. Starting today, we will issue job notifications on a large scale," Rajanarasimha announced.
For the unversed, a total of 59 SC sub-castes have been divided into three groups in Telangana. 1% reservation has been allocated to 15 sub-castes in Group A, 9% to 18 sub-castes in Group B and 5% to 26 sub-castes in Group C. With the implementation of this classification, future vacancies in government jobs will be filled according to the priority of these groups.
