In the wake of the multi-crore land scam in Visakhapatnam rocking the Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh, the ACB authorities arrested the Sub-Registrar of Gajuwaka Venkaiah Naidu and claimed to have unearthed disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs. 100 crores.
The authorities produced Naidu before the special judge who remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody.
Raids and searches were conducted by the ACB officials in Vizag, Tirupathi and ten other places where the Sub-Registrar was stated to have acquired agricultural and commercial lands, and other properties in the name of his two wives and also on benami names. During the raids the ACB officials were stated to have also seized cash, gold and silver articles etc.
It might be mentioned here that the AP government came under the scanner following allegations of the land scam in Vizag in which the TDP's leaders and even ministers were allegedly involved. Amidst a hue and cry raised by the Opposition parties, especially YSR Congress Party President and Leader Of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, the Chief Minister entrusted the investigations to an SIT.
However the YSRCP was not content with the action and expressed doubts about a fair probe in the scam, and demanded that a CBI inquiry be ordered. In pursuance of this demand Jaganmohan Reddy's party is also planning a maha dharna on June 22.
Meanwhile A P Minister for Agriculture Somi Reddy Chandramohan Reddy ridiculed the YSR Congress Party chief for demanding a CBI probe when the government had already ordered an SIT probe. How can a person facing a CBI inquiry ask for a CBI inquiry, he quipped. He said that the state government would not spare anybody who was found involved in the scam.
