Rs 20-a-kg Onions From August 5: Harish Rao
Due to the public resentment against the soaring prices of onions, the government is intervening directly to buy stocks and sell them at normal prices.
Keeping the public resentment against the soaring prices of onions in the open market and at Rythu Bazaars in mind, the Telangana government is intervening directly to get adequate stocks and sell them at normal prices.
During a review meeting with officials over the escalating prices of onions, Telangana minister T Harish Rao stated that this essential commodity would be sold at Rs 20 per kg from August 5.
The state had already written a letter to the Centre seeking its help through funds for the stabilization of prices, he said.
"We have decided to sell 100 metric tons of onions in 40 selected places in the twin cities and all revenue divisions. Officials will buy the commodity from Nasik in Maharashtra, and from the Kurnool and Malakpet markets, and cater to the normal customers' needs," he said.
There was no need for panic among the consumers, who would soon get onions as the normal prices, he added.
Rao also stated that the government would encourage farmers to go in for onion production and subsidies, through the horticulture department.
