The Telangana Congress chief urged the official to allow Rahul Gandhi to meet the NSUI activists who had been jailed following a protest at the Osmania University.
TPCC chief A Revanth Reddy today called on the superintendent of the Chanchalguda central prison and urged him to allow Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to meet the NSUI activists who had been jailed following a protest at the Osmania University and detained in the prison.
He also submitted a representation to the superintendent on the issue.
He was accompanied by party leaders MLA Jagga Reddy, former minister Geeta Reddy, former MP M Anjan Kumar Yadav and others.
Speaking to media persons later, Revanth Reddy said that Rahul Gandhi had decided to meet the 18 arrested NSUI activists at the Chanchalguda prison during his visit to the State.
Gandhi would visit the prison on May 7 to meet the activists, and the party had submitted a representation on the issue to the prison officials and urged them to make arrangements for the visit, he said.
Commenting on the Osmania University visit of Rahul Gandhi, Reddy said that Congress leaders had met with the Vice Chancellor of the university and sought his permission for the visit, claiming that the visit would be apolitical.
He alleged that permission for the visit of Rahul Gandhi to OU was denied due to pressure from the CM.
He also alleged that the city police had overacted in arresting the NSUI activists, including its State president Balmuri Venkat Rao, at the OU, and that the police had booked illegal cases against the activists before getting them a judicial remand of 14 days.
