BRS Uses Street Play To Expose Congress' Failures

The play depicted a contrast between Rahul Gandhi's image as the Constitution's defender and the Telangana government's alleged actions undermining it.

The BRS today protested against the "ongoing Constitutional violations" under the present Congress government in Telangana through a street play staged at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad.

A group of Hyderabad Central University students portrayed "the Congress leadership's double standards and political theatrics in the name of Constitutional values".

Using satire and symbolism, their performance drew attention to alleged governance failures, corruption and the erosion of democratic norms in the State.

From the outset, the street play pointedly critised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The play depicted that while Gandhi had been touring the country holding copies of the Constitution and projecting himself as its protector, the Congress government in Telangana was indulging in actions that undermined Constitutional principles.

Scenes referring to alleged attempts to lure legislators, attacks on SC and ST students, and political opportunism questioned the party's moral claims.

The performance also focused on "administrative lapses" under the Chief Minister's leadership. Allegations of financial inducements to legislators, land-related controversies, unfulfilled electoral promises and the diversion of public funds to non-essential activities were also dramatised on stage.

References were also made to actions carried out in the name of HYDRAA, the Lagacharla land acquisition episode involving tribal communities, and criticism over spending on sporting events instead of public welfare.

One of the most striking elements of the play was the portrayal of "Mother Constitution" in chains, symbolising what the students said was the shrinking space for Constitutional governance in the State.

Through this character, the performers conveyed a sense of anguish over "the systematic distortion of democratic norms". The play concluded with a strong message that citizens themselves would ultimately rise to reclaim and protect the Constitution.

Impressed by the performance, BRS working president K T Rama Rao, along with other party senior leaders and workers present there, rose in a standing ovation.

KTR congratulated the students and praised the manner in which they reflected contemporary political realities through theatre.
