Former president of Bharatiya Janata Party M Venkaiah Naidu, on Sunday, criticized the state government's move to rename Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranam as Rajiv Gandhi Lalitha Kala Thoranam.
Talking to media persons at the party office, Naidu said the renaming of institutions and other organization after Congress leaders would hurt the sentiments of Telugu people. He termed it an "uncivilized decision" taken up by a veteran leader like K Rosaiah.
Demanding that the government withdraw the move to rename the Lalitha Kala Thoranam, he warned that if this was not done so, the BJP would launch an agitation across the state.
Rajya Sabha member Dr. T Subbarami Reddy has come forward to develop the Thoranam as the biggest state-owned open-air theatre into a closed auditorium with all modern facilities with a seating capacity of 3,000 people. He had requested that the auditorium be renamed after late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The government agreed to this proposal and issued orders to this effect last Friday.
Criticizing the State government for its failure in regulating operations of micro finance institutions, Naidu said the party would raise this issue in the winter session of Parliament, demanding the establishment of regional rural banks in all panchayats.
He said that 68% of villagers were depending on lending of private micro finance firms and that government banks are providing loans to only 32% of villagers. This is why villagers were approaching MFIs, the veteran politician stated.
The senior BJP leader said the government should make efforts to open banks in panchayats and open accounts for all villagers. He demanded serious action against those MFIs which resort to arm-twisting in the recovery of their loans from villagers.
The Congress party is unable to tackle the BJP politically and so is resorting to using the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Governor system and police and resorting to the arrest of leaders by filing fake cases against BJP and Sangh Parivar leaders, he alleged.
