Massive protests broke out in several places in Telangana opposing the reorganization of the districts, as people from the political and public spheres took to the streets and organized bandhs across several districts.
The Sircilla Zilla Sadhana Samiti today gave a 48-hour bandh call demanding that the Telangana government make Sircilla a district. Supporting this, agitators in the region staged a dharna in front of the RTC depot and burnt bus tyres at Gandhi Chowk and the Ambedkar crossroads. They then marched towards the Old Bus Stand and destroyed the glass panes of a store in a petrol pump there. They also destroyed the glasses of an RTC bus when it going towards Vampelli through Ambedkar Chowrasta. Several Opposition leaders staged a "rasta roko" dharna at Nethanna Chowk.
In another part of the State, people demanded that the government make Korutla a revenue division. The Revenue Division Sadhana Samiti also called for a 48-hour shutdown. Educational institutions, businesses and cinema halls were shut. Some of the leaders of the bandh also took up a bike rally in the town.
The Zilla Samiti In the Warangal district called for a total bandh demanding Mulugu as a district. The Samiti members protested against the decision to make Bhoopalpally a district and alleged that it was being made one only because it had coal reserves.
Several women's organizations also took up agitations favouring Parakala as a revenue division. Parakala MLA Ch Dharma Reddy alleged that the State government had ignored their demands despite being given a memorandum on the same.
Calls for bandhs were also made in several other towns including Janagama, Hanamkonda and Chinnachintakunta with similar demands.
Several political party leaders from the Congress, BJP and TDP, and students unions, public organizations and intellectuals participated in protests across the State.
Many complaints from commuters were heard as the traffic came to a grinding halt in the places where the protest rallies were being carried out.
