Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Ponnala Lakshmaiah on Thursday alleged that at least 120 farmers had committed suicide during the 2-month rule of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, Ponnala said that the TRS government had failed to fulfill any of the promises that it had made to the people.
He claimed that the previous Congress regime took no time in providing free power and other facilities to the farmers after it returned to power in the 2004 elections. However, even after 2 months, the TRS government was yet to take practical steps to honour its commitments.
Strongly condemning the lathicharge on farmers in the Medak district, Ponnala said that the Congress party would organise massive protests if the TRS government continued to suppress the agitation.
The Congress wanted to give some time to the government to initiate steps for farmer welfare. However, its silence should not be treated as its weakness, and as a main opposition, the Congress would protest against all failures and anti-people policies of the TRS government, he said.
He also informed that the Plenary Session of the Telangana Congress would be held on August 23 and 24. (INN)
