The Hyderabad Police today refuted the reports of alleged brutality against 60 students on the JNTUH premises on Monday afternoon during a protest.
It clarified that the KPHB police did not resort to any form of violence against students.
It also said that the report that students were trying to set themselves on fire was false.
It is learnt that in the backdrop of the JNTUH policy to implement Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the 2015-2016 academic year, some 12,000 students were detained in several affiliated colleges.
Aggrieved by the CBCS system, some 200 to 300 students gathered at the KPHB bus stop on the main road outside the college's main gate and tried to barge into the campus after raising slogans. As per the police, the students had not obtain any permission to stage a protest on campus. The police tried to pacify the protestors and also asked them to nominate two or three representatives who could talk to the Vice-Chancellor about the issue.
When the students did not budge, the police took 16 student leaders into preventive custody. In order to stop the leader from being whisked away to the police station, some of the students blocked the vehicle's path.
The situation was handled and the remaining agitating students were eventually dispersed.
