The counting of votes for the second phase of the panchayat elections in Andhra Pradesh is in progress.
The polling for 6,971 sarpanch posts was held on Saturday, from 7am to 1pm. Barring a few instances of violence, the polling was largely peaceful across the state.
Reports of clashes between workers of different political parties came in from West Godavari and Prakasam districts. However, elaborate security arrangements ensured peaceful polling in other districts.
Of 21,592 gram panchayats, as many as 21,491 are going to the polls in 3 phases. A total of 6,566 panchayats went to the polls on July 23 in the first phase, while the second phase of polling and counting was held on Saturday. The third phase of polling will be held on July 31. (INN)
