Polavaram: Palvai Meets Governor

Palvai skirts raising corruption charges against Ponnala, says meeting discussed only Polavaram
Hyderabad | 16th June 2010
A delegation of senior Congress leaders led by MLC Palvai Govardhan Reddy called on Governor E S L Narasimhan on Wednesday, and highlighted the benefits of bringing in some changes in the designs of the Polavaram Project.

The senior leader told media persons after his meeting with the Governor that he had submitted a memorandum to Narasimhan to direct the state government to bring in changes in the present design of the Polavaram Project. He denied that he had met the Governor to lodge any complaint against anyone.

Palvai said he had urged the Governor to implement the design suggested by senior Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao, so that people of both Telangana and Andhra regions benefit from the project. He said that he had told the Governor that VH's suggested designs for the project were not only feasible but also beneficial.

He said that he highlighted the problems that tribals living in the area would face if the Polavaram Project is implemented in its present form.

Palvai also said that just as senior party leaders from Telangana region were invited to New Delhi after the by-elections to discuss various issue; he, too, would seek appointments with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Palvai had on Tuesday sought an appointment with the Governor for Wednesday, and it was speculated that he would be formally handing in a written complaint alleging widespread corruption in the carrying out of works on the Jalayagnam Projects. However, he is believed to have dropped plans of lodging any complaints after Congress In-Charge for Andhra Pradesh Affairs and Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily spoke to him.

Moily is believed to have told Palvai not to lodge any formal complaints until the High Command takes stock of the situation. He reportedly told him not to put the Congress into any piquant situation as the by-elections to the Assembly are around the corner.

Following Moily's directive, Palvai kept his appointment with the Governor but did not lodge any formal complaint.
