Chanchalguda Central Jail officials, on Monday, denied permission to former Lok Sabha Speaker and presidential aspirant P A Sangma to meet YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy.
Sangma had come to Chanchalguda jail to seek Jagan's party's support for his candidature in the presidential elections scheduled to be held in July. However, the jail officials denied him permission, asking him to come during the jail's visiting hours.
Later, Sangma described the jail officials' denial of permission as "unfortunate". He said that he had written a letter to the jail authorities about 10 days ago, seeking permission to meet Jagan, and that they had even also fixed his appointment for 11am. However, the officials denied him permission at the last minute, citing his visit as "political".
Stating that an MIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi was
allowed to meet Jagan in jail a few days ago, Sangma complained that a different yardstick was being followed in his case even though he had held a high constitutional office earlier.
Later, Sangma met Vijayamma, the honorary president of the YSR Congress, at her residence, and sought the support of her party. He also congratulated Vijayamma for the party's thumping victory in the recent Assembly by-elections.
The YSR Congress 2 MPs, including Jagan and 17 MLAs, in the Electoral College.
Talking to media persons, YSR Congress leader M V Mysoora Reddy said that the political affairs committee of the party would take a decision on its stand in the presidential elections "as soon as possible", after holding consultations with Jagan. (INN)
