The Telangana Congress lambasted MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi for a tweet in which he accused the then Congress government of allowing the demolition of a mosque in Muthangi village of Medak district in 2005.
Greater Hyderabad Congress Committee (GHCC) Minorities Department chairman Sheikh Abdullah Sohail, in a media statement on Friday, condemned the Hyderabad MP for his "baseless and misleading statement" against the Congress.
"Asaduddin Owaisi was trying to wrongly link the Congress party with the demolition of the Muthangi mosque. He might have forgotten that in 2005, the MIM was an ally of the Congress not only in the State, but also at the Centre. Owaisi sailed with the Congress till 2013, and used to take pride in posing for pictures with Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders. Why did Owaisi not level this allegation in 2005, and why did he enjoy power for over eight years after the incident?" he asked.
Abdullah Sohail said that the MIM members were sycophants. "Asaduddin Owaisi is an opportunist who is now sailing with the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre through the TRS," he alleged.
"The MIM chief is targeting the Congress only to please BJP and its secret ally TRS. He is supporting each and every move of the two Parties either directly or indirectly," he claimed.
He also alleged that Owaisi had tried to give a communal twist to demonetization alleging that ATMs and banks in Muslim-dominated areas were not being provided with cash. Congress workers held protests across Telangana against demonetization. But MIM leaders were supporting the BJP-led government by staying silent on the issue.
