Several activists of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee were taken into custody when they tried to storm into the Congress state headquarters at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday.
The OU JAC members were protesting against the statement made by the AICC Spokesperson P C Chacko, who had said that statehood for Telangana was not on the agenda of the UPA's Common Minimum Programme.
Accusing the ruling party of betraying the Telangana cause, as well as the trust of pro-Telangana groups and activists, the OU JAC leaders demanded that the Congress leaders from the region resign from their posts immediately.
The OU JAC activists also burnt an effigy of Chacko in front of Gandhi Bhavan.
Tension prevailed for a while when some OU JAC members tried to barge into Gandhi Bhavan. However, their attempts were foiled by the police, who took them into custody and shifted them to a nearby police station. The activists were later released. (INN)
