OU Lathicharge: HC Takes Action

The High Court demands that government bear medical expenses of injured students undergoing treatment
Hyderabad | 16th February 2010
The political response to the lathicharge incident at Osmania University has been expectedly vicious. The Assembly was adjourned more than once when MLAs kept creating a ruckus and did not let other MLAs address the session despite the Speaker's appeals to maintain order. Telangana ministers like Nagam Janardhan Reddy demanded that all cases against students and others who took part in the Telangana protests be taken back.

Several other ministers demanded that action be taken against the police who used force against the students.

The High Court has ordered that PSR Anjaneyulu, the police joint commissioner, appear personally in court. The court has also demanded that the government pay up the medical expenses of the injured students who are undergoing treatment.

In Warangal, students attacked homes of politicians. The TDP office was surrounded by lawyers demanding resignations of Telangana ministers.

And in related news, Mallesh, a degree student from Jadcherla in Mahabubnagar district committed suicide over fear of Telangana not attaining separate statehood. Mallesh died after consuming pesticide.
