The Forum for Good Governance (FGG) today urged Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to take steps for the appointment of a State Election Commissioner (SEC) for the state.
It said that the post had remained vacant for six months now.
The Secretary of the forum M Padmanabha Reddy submitted a representation to the Governor on the issue.
In his representation, Reddy told the Governor that the post of the Secretary of the Commission was also vacant due to the superannuation of the existing Commissioner.
He told the Governor that the appointment of an SEC and a secretary were very important keeping in view the upcoming elections for the GHMC and the Warangal and Khammam municipal corporations, and the by-elections in the various municipalities and municipal corporations of the state.
Referring to Article 243za of the Indian constitution, Reddy told the Governor that the processes like the preparation of the voters' lists, reservations of wards and training for the polling staff needed to be held under the supervision of the Commission, and that it would require a lot of time to complete these processes which was necessary for the election schedule to be issued.
Citing Article 243A of the Indian constitution, he said that the SEC needed to be appointed by the Governor of the state, and urged her to take steps for the appointment of the Commissioner at the earliest.
