The National Green Tribunal (NGT) today administered a big shock to the Telangana government.
It imposed a fine of Rs 900 crore in connection with the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project of the State.
The tribunal passed the orders while responding to a petition filed by the Andhra Pradesh government alleging that the Telangana government was committing contempt of court by carrying out the project works without obtaining environmental clearances.
A Rs 300 crore fine was imposed on the State government for constructing the project without taking environmental clearances, a Rs 528 crore fine was imposed for causing damage to the environment through the project, and a Rs 92.8 crore fine was imposed for causing damage to the environment in the Dindi project.
The NGT asked the State government to pay the fine in the next three months, and to deposit the fine amount with the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).
It also asked the State government to set up a committee with officials of the union government for the monitoring of the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project.
