People thronged to temples across the state on the New Year day on Tuesday, and offered prayers.
Tirupati had the maximum number of devotees, while in the state capital and other places, people dressed in their best visited temples and offered prayers.
Temples at Srisailam, Vijayawada, Srikalahasti, Yadagirigutta and Simhachalam were packed with devotees. The Saibaba temple at Dilshuknagar in the city saw serpentine queues from the morning.
However, Governor E S L Narasimhan, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu and some others kept away from the celebrations to mourn the death of the Delhi rape victim. (INN)
