The Union Ministry of Railways today decided to resume the MMTS train services in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad from the coming week after a gap of almost a year.
The services had been suspended after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in India last year.
In a statement, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said that the Union Railway Ministry had taken the call to resume the train services following a request he had made to Union Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal.
Reddy urged the residents of the state capital to strictly follow all the relevant Covid-19 safety and prevention norms while travelling in the trains from next week.
The MMTS system has been providing affordable and quality transit services to the residents of the twin cities for the last couple of years. As a result, the resumption of the services will help many, including daily wagers and domestic helpers, greatly.
The announcement comes right on the heels of the Telangana Cabinet's decision to
lift the lockdown that was being enforced in the state in the wake of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic since May 12. The restrictions were suspended from today.
Since the lockdown is now being lifted, the state government has also decided to reopen Telangana's educational institutions.
The education department has already been told to prepare for the reopening of all categories of educational institutions in the state from July 1 while ensuring complete adherence to the relevant Covid-19 guidelines.
