GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said that the Mir Alam Tank would be developed on the lines of the Hussain Sagar Lake.
Speaking after inspecting the Mir Alam Tank on Thursday, the Commissioner said that Rs 45 crores would be spent for the overall development of the historic tank.
The Commissioner said that the GHMC Council had already sanctioned an amount of Rs 5 crores for the project, and the GHMC was planning to get further funds sanctioned for its beautification projects in the next meeting of the Council.
The people of the Old City would see a visible change in the coming months, he added, with the GHMC planning to develop the Mir Alam Tank in a very big way since the people of the Old City did not have facilities for walking, cycling, jogging tracks etc.
In the first phase, the GHMC will take up works worth Rs 10 crores, which include modules for protection of the lake, an entry plaza, walking and cycling tracks, tree plantation, theme parks, landscaping, island improvement, boating, fountains, illuminations, water quality improvement measures etc., across the stretch of the entire Mir Alam Tank Circle of around 7 kilometers. These works will be completed in about 3 months.
The Mir Alam Tank will have 3 entrance gates - one from Bahadurpura, one from the No. 9 lane, and a third from the Rajendranagar Circle.
The GHMC is also planning to lay a separate road for the nearby residents of Mir Alam Tank.
The Commissioner said that a special consultant would be appointed after the completion of the first phase to take up the project in a big way, and the GHMC's goal was to make the Tank fully functional by January 2015. (INN)
