Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on Friday announced that he would challenge the
Union Cabinet's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to carve out the Telangana state, in the Supreme Court of India.
Describing the decision as "unconstitutional" and "undemocratic", Lagadapati said that the state cannot be bifurcated without passing a resolution in the state Assembly. He said, "Certain guidelines on the bifurcation of a state were violated while taking a decision on the Telangana issue."
Citing the landmark judgment of 1994 in the S R Bommai vs Union of India case, he said, "The Supreme Court has established strict guidelines for invoking Article 356 for imposition of the President's Rule in a state. The decision to divide Andhra Pradesh is an imposition of the Centre's will on the people without their consent," he said.
Lagadapati hoped that all Congress leaders from the Seemandhra region would support his move. (INN)
