Telangana IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao today unveiled a nine-foot-tall statue of Colonel Santosh Babu, an officer of the Indian army who was martyred in the Galwan clash in June last year. The statue is located in Suryapet's court crossroads area.
Reports say that the state government constructed the statue at a cost of Rs 20 lakh in memory of the soldier.
The installation was undertaken after Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao promised that a statue would be set up to commemorate Babu's first death anniversary.
Following the unveiling, KTR, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy and the martyr's family, including Babu's wife Santoshi, offered floral tributes to the soldier. Various locals also paid their respects to him.
Speaking on the occasion, KTR praised the martyr for his sacrifice and assured the family that the state government would support them.
The minister also changed the name of the crossroad to Colonel Santosh Babu Chaurasta from its older name of Court Chaurasta in a show of respect for Babu.
Jagadish Reddy too lauded the martyr for his great services to the state and the country, and said, "We will not forget his sacrifice. We will continue to support his family."
Babu's wife expressed her gratitude to the state government for its support.
