Telangana BJP head Bandi Sanjay Kumar today called the state government's 2BHK housing scheme an "utter failure" and demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao implement the Centre's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the state instead to fulfil "the dreams of the homeless".
Addressing a press conference near Bapu Ghat before embarking on the third day of his ongoing Praja Sangram Yatra (PSY), the leader asked KCR to clarify how many free 2BHK units had been constructed in the state so far.
He claimed that during a meeting of the state Urban Development Committee that he attended, the TRS government had, on record, stated that only 8,000 double bedroom houses had been constructed in the urban areas of the state so far, and asked that a list of the program's beneficiaries be made public.
Kumar then alleged that KCR had been giving house pattas to a select few whenever there were elections in the state and then forgetting about his promises after the election results were declared.
"It is clear that the state government's 2BHK scheme has been a failure. Its results and coverage have been underwhelming. It is best that the KCR regime now introduce and implement the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the state to provide homes to all the homeless, poor and downtrodden sections," he reiterated.
Justifying his demand further, the MP then provided the details of the Centre's welfare schemes, and stated, "While 2,03,080 houses had been sanctioned for Telangana's municipalities by the Centre, 1.4 lakh houses had been sanctioned for the GHMC area alone. The Centre had also released Rs 3,500 crore for the construction of the houses. The KCR government has already utilised Rs 2,285 crore out of this sum. Besides this, the PM had sanctioned and released Rs 1,287 crore to the GHMC for the implementation of various welfare programmes. The TRS regime has been unable to really use these opportunities to develop the state and support its people."
Stating that the health system in the state was ineffective, Kumar also alleged that the KCR government had failed to provide even the most basic health facilities to people during the Covid-19 pandemic, and asserted, "When the TRS regime was unable to help the people during the pandemic, I wonder why KCR is still so reluctant to implement the Ayusman Bharat Yojana which will be beneficial to the poor."
The leader began the third day of his yatra from the Tippu Khan bridge near Bapu Ghat. He was to cover 13 km today.
