The first ever Mega Job Mela organised by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday turned out to be a success in terms of participation, but proved a farce when it came to the jobs and salaries that were offered to the candidates.
Over 10,000 job aspirants participated in the Mega Job Mela for a total of 5,415 posts offered by 36 companies.
Accordig to the GHMC, of 6,200 applications registered in the Mega Job Mela for a total of 5,415 posts offered by 36 companies, nearly 1,200 jobs were confirmed. However, the GHMC said that more data would be released after due procedures, in a day or two.
However, many of the posts that were offered to the candidates were related to sales and customer services, and the salaries ranged from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 15,000.
There were no separate queues for men and women, at the mela, leading to chaos. The shortage of space, too, added to the problems.
Further, many aspirants were disappointed that companies did not offer jobs for highly-qualified professionals.
"I'm a civil engineer, and there is not a single vacancy for this job. Even the salaries being offered for other posts are too low," said Mohammad Ateeq, an aspirant.
However, some aspirants were happy with the Job Mela.
"I recently finished my SCC and did a diploma in IT. I have been short-listed for the second round of interview," said Syeda Tabasum.
The hiring companies, too, complained of a shortage of space and glitches in the management of event.
"Due to the shortage of space, and a high number of aspirants, we will be conducting the second round of interviews at our office later," Real Shopping HR Manager Lavanya said.
While some companies complained that they were not reaching to suitable candidates, several candidates did not find jobs that match their academic qualification.
"I did my MBA (HR) and was expecting an offer of Rs. 22,000 - Rs. 27,000. But there is not a single vacancy on offer that matches my qualification, and they, too, are offering just Rs. 8,000 as monthly salary," Shahzaman, another aspirant, said.
Earlier, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi inaugurated the Mega Job Mela, and advised job aspirants not to shy away from hard work. He recalled that when he went to London for his studies, he was offered just one-and-a-half pounds to clean the toilets at McDonalds.
He praised the GHMC for its initiative of holding job melas, and hoped that they would help in the eradication of unemployment and poverty.
GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu said that the response GHMC received for the job mela was "tremendous".
He said the GHMC would design a mechanism to train unemployed youth, and that it would also ensure that the youth hired in job melas are retained by the companies.
GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain said that the corporation would organise job melas once every 2 months in all the zones of the GHMC limits.
Yakutpura MLA Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, GHMC Additional Commissioner (UCD) S V Raghuprasad and other senior officials were also present. (INN)
