Governor E S L Narasimhan on Tuesday released the promotional poster made for neighbourhood bird conservation, as part of the environmental campaign launched by the Environment Education Wing of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
"Every child shall get a first-hand experience of living with nature and protecting nature. Even in the Raj Bhavan, we will initiate steps to protect the neighbourhood birds. Nest-making, which Prakrithi Mitra is promoting, is a very important way of building a relation with the birds in the neighbourhood. We will also place nests made and given by student-members of the National Green Corps, and welcome birds into our Raj Bhavan," the Governor said after releasing the poster.
"I am moved by the campaign, and I want to support this campaign for sparrows and neighbourhood birds," said Vimala Narasimhan, First Lady of the state.
The two posters in English and Telugu call upon citizens to take care of the habitat of the neighbourhood birds, and to keep some water in shallow bowls in the open for them. Every life form has a significant role to play in the web of life. The little house sparrow is a major indicator of the health of our environment. The house sparrow was once a very common bird all over the country, whether it was in a bustling urban area or a small village.
The longevity record for a house sparrow is over 13-years-old, and sparrows are the part of every family household. The decline of house sparrows due to pollution is an indicator of the degrading environment in which we all live. Due to our own lifestyle, there is an increase in sparrow habitat loss. To draw attention to this point, the World Sparrow Day is observed on 20 March every year, while Prakrithi Mitra is observing the Neighbourhood Birds Week.
The Governor and the first lady of the state visited the Biodiversity Pylon, and planted a sapling in the Biodiversity Park today. Among those who were present on the occasion were Jaya Kumar, Special Secretary Forests, S N Jadav, Member Secretary AP Biodiversity Board, and students from Prakrithi Mitra National Green Corps.
