Hyderabad | 24th May 2013
GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain and Commissioner M T Krishna Babu have both observed that the ongoing desilting works were progressing at a slow pace, and that there is a need to prioritize and expedite the works.
The Mayor and the Commissioner, along with other senior officials, inspected major drains and sewers in the Central Zone on Friday.
The Mayor directed the Chief Engineer and the Superintendent Engineer to deploy more labourers in shifts at these areas, and to complete the work by the end of this month.
He observed that a lot of encroachments were coming up at Bada Bazar Bridge and Osman P T Bridge, and directed the Deputy Commissioner, Circle No. 7, to immediately remove all the unauthorized encroachments with the help of the Town Planning wing.
Majid Hussain directed the Commissioner to modernize the central emergency squad by equipping it with sufficient machinery and labour so that the emergency squad can tackle problematic situations without causing any inconvenience.
Further, the Mayor and the Commissioner personally inspected one of the catch pits.
BJP floor leader Bangari Prakash briefed the Mayor and the Commissioner about the ongoing works in his area, and informed them that in spite of the fact that debris removal had been undertaken by the contractors previously, the debris - pieces of broken bricks, pebbles and other garbage - has accumulated again there.
To this end, the Commissioner directed the Superintendent Engineer to personally communicate with the concerned Executive Engineers and contractors to remove the silt, garbage and debris etc as soon as possible.
Bangari Prakash also requested the Commissioner to shift the fruit vendors near the Gudimalkapur market as most of them have a habit of throwing garbage into the nearby drains, which in turn get clogged in case of a heavy downpour.
The Commissioner said that nearly 65% of the desilting works in the entire GHMC area has been completed, and that the progress of various projects has to be expedited by engaging more labour.
He also said that 150 stagnation points have been identified, and that sanctions have already been accorded and work on them is likely to be completed by June end.
Central Zone In-charge Commissioner N Ravi Kiran, Chief Engineer K Suresh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Srimannarayana and other senior officials from Engineering, Town Planning and Health wings participated in the inspection. (INN)
