GHMC Chief Asks Staff To Expedite Desilting Works

Observing that the desilting works were going on at a slow pace, GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar directed officials to expedite the works.

The Commissioner asked the Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineers to deploy more labour and machinery in shifts, and also to provide chain link meshes wherever the need was there. He wanted the works to be completed by the end of this month - i. e. prior to onset of the monsoon.

He directed the Superintending Engineer, Lakes, and GHMC's engineering officials to take necessary action immediately for removing silt all along the surplus platform of the Hussain Sagar. He also directed the officials to take necessary steps for the removal of encroachments which were obstructing the flow through the surplus nala.

Somesh Kumar, the Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineers and the concerned Executive Engineers inspected the various nalas in Central and South Zones on Tuesday.

Kumar observed that a lot of encroachments were coming up in some of the nalas, and directed the concerned officials to remove all the unauthorized encroachments with the help of Town Planning officials immediately.

The Commissioner directed the Chief Engineer to construct the retaining walls and to provide chain link meshes all along the nalas wherever necessary to curb the menace of regular dumping.

The Commissioner appealed to the citizens to see that garbage, debris and waste materials were not thrown into the nalas, and requested them to cooperate with the GHMC to curb the menace.

Somesh Kumar interacted with the contractors and enquired about their men and machinery. He said that dumping the removed silt near the nalas was not allowed, and that the dumped silt would need to be lifted immediately as it could cause inconvenience to the passersby. He directed the contractors to deploy more labour and expedite the works on a war footing.

The Commissioner directed the Deputy Commissioner, Circle 9, to remove the encroachments at Amberpet, which the latter did within 3 hours with the help of Town Planning officials. (INN)
