Failed Eye Surgeries: NHRC Slaps Notice On Government
Failed eye surgeries in a government hospital has left 7 patients visually impaired. The NHRC has sent a notice to the government seeking an explanation.
In a setback to the Telangana government, the National Human Rights Commission today slapped a notice seeking an explanation for the multiple failed cataract surgeries which resulted in blindness in seven patients in the government-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital on July 7.
The incident occurred after the patients were allegedly administered contaminated saline solution during the surgeries.
Taking a serious note of the alleged negligence on the part of the hospital's authorities, the NHRC took suo motu cognizance of the case and asked the government to submit a detailed report of the incident.
The NHRC officials expressed their dismay over the "diminishing standards" and alleged medical negligence after it was suspected that the hospital authorities were attempting to cover up the incident. It was also alleged that the patients were never told what went wrong during the surgeries.
However, some experts in the field who visited the hospital soon after the incident said that it would too premature to conclude anything at this early stage.
A case under section 338 (negligence endangering life or personal safety) of the IPC will be registered against the hospital if the doctors are found prima facie guilty of the offence.
Telangana Health Minister Dr C Laxma Rao promised swift justice to the victims.
