Mahankali Srinivas (27) of Gudem village in Bejjanki mandal, who was undergoing treatment for burn injuries, succumbed to his injuries at Secunderabad's Yashoda Hospital today.
Srinivas, a dalit, had attempted self-immolation on September 3, after Manakonduru MLA Rasamayi Balakishan reportedly spoke to him in an irreverent manner. Srinivas then poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire in front of the MLA's office.
The MLA, however, denied that he had spoken in a reckless manner to the victim.
The other dalit, Y Parasuramulu, who sustained injuries when trying to save Srinivas, has recovered, and is expected to be discharged on Monday, according to hospital sources.
It is said that the victims were disappointed as they did not get the three acres of land promised by the ruling TRS during the elections.
Following the death of Srinivas, the police have stepped up security at the MLA's office to be able to thwart any possible backlash from the relatives of the victim and the villagers.
Meanwhile, Telangana PCC chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy held the state government responsible for the death of Srinivas, and said that dalits were feeling that they had no security in the TRS regime.
