Crop Insurance Cheque Handed To CM
The government has extended WBCIS for cotton, chilli, oil palm and sweet lime this year.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah was on Tuesday handed over a cheque of Rs. 17.34 crore by the chairman and managing director of the Agriculture Insurance Company Of India, at his residence, towards the release of crop insurance claims to the chilli growers of Guntur under the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme for 2009-10.
Accepting the cheque, Rosaiah called upon farmers to make use of the Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme.
He said that the scheme was effectively implemented, and that he was looking forward to the success of the project in Guntur.
The government has extended WBCIS to other districts as well, for cotton, chilli, oil palm and sweet lime this year.
The number of farmers receiving the benefit in the first season was 16,357, the total amount of claims is Rs. 17.34 crore and the number of mandals receiving the benefit is 38.
The CMD said that in Guntur district, for the red chilli growers, the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS) was launched during the 2009 kharif season on a pilot basis. Agriculture Insurance Company Of India conducted awareness programs for farmers, obtained their consent and provided a customized product as per their requirements.
The scheme covers perils that include deficit rainfall, excess rainfall, uneven distribution of rainfall and relative humidity. Under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme, chilli farmers could not gain the benefit of the compensation even in adverse seasons.
