The Congress on Tuesday demanded that the Telangana government establish a world class memorial for former chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy said that the State government should set up a YSR Memorial starting by allocating land at an important location in Hyderabad and providing funds.
"It is indisputable that the rule of Y S Rajasekhar Reddy was a golden era for the then undivided Andhra Pradesh, and that people from all regions, especially Telangana, benefited from his schemes. Several revolutionary initiatives like fee reimbursement, 4% reservation for Muslims, Aarogyasri etc. helped crores of poor people, and redefined the concept of public welfare. Since Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao himself has admitted on several occasion that the YSR regime was pro-poor, he should take the initiative of setting up a memorial to pay tributes to the former Chief Minister," he said.
Reddy said that there was a need to compile the achievements and services of YSR to the people in a proper format so that future generations could learn about them.
"The YSR Memorial should be unique and must not be confined to a statue. The State government should constitute a committee to study the proposal in a time-bound manner and come up with specific recommendations for setting up the memorial," he advised.
The Congress leader also said that the setting up of a YSR Memorial in Hyderabad would improve the relationship between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh even further given that YSR's son Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is now the CM of AP.
Narayana Reddy said that he would be writing a letter to KCR regarding the memorial and another to Jagan requesting him to pursue the matter.
The proposal of the Congress could put KCR in a tricky position for obvious reasons.
