Congress' Protests Against New Secretariat, And For Dalits

Hyderabad |
Telangana Congress leaders today held quite a few activities denouncing the TRS government's rule.

First, opposing the KCR government's plans to construct a new Secretariat at the Bison Polo Grounds in Secunderabad, the Congress leaders staged a dharna at the grounds.

Senior Congress leaders Uttam Kumar Reddy, Jana Reddy, Shabbir Ali, V Hanumantha Rao and others participated in the dharna.

Speaking on the occasion, Rao said that KCR's plans to shift the Secretariat and Assembly were nothing but a "Tughlaqian" move. Instead of fulfilling his election promises to the people, the Chief Minister was blowing up tax-payers' funds and denting the treasury for his personal popularity, he charged.

Stoutly opposing the plans to construct a new Secretariat at the Bison Polo Grounds, the former Rajya Sabha member pointed out that the Secunderabad area had already become very congested, and that the nearby roads were getting choked with numerous traffic-related problems, and that shifting the entire core government machinery here would aggravate the problem dramatically. When Telangana already had a functioning Secretariat, where was the need for going in for a new complex by wasting public funds, he asked.

Leader Of Opposition in the Council Shabbir Ali accused the Chief Minister of behaving like a medieval king. What right did he have to waste public money for his whims and fancies, he asked, and pointed out that the state government was already debt-ridden to the tune of Rs 73,000 crores.

Clarifying that the Congress was not against the state government acquiring the Bison Polo Grounds from the defence authorities, Leader Of Opposition in the Assembly K Jana Reddy said that the party was only opposing the idea of constructing a new Secretariat at the grounds. The government could not indulge in wasting public funds for superstitious beliefs like vaasthu, he said. The Bison Polo Grounds should instead be utilized for other public facilities, he said.

The Congress leaders later staged a protest at the Babu Jagjivan Ram statue at Basheerbagh, and demanded that the state government initiate stern action against those who attacked dalits.

Uttam Kumar Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, V Hanumantha Rao, Gajjala Kantham and others then took out a rally from the statue to Ambedkar junction on Tank Bund.

After paying floral tributes to the Ambedkar statue, Rao said that he would launch a relay fast from September 12 against family rule in Telangana.

TPCC working president Bhatti Vikramarka accused the state government of transforming the State into a police raj. Attacks on dalits were increasing day after day, he claimed. He said that the Congress would conduct a movement till justice was done to the victims.

BJP MLA Chintala Ramachandra Reddy, also part of the all-party protest, alleged that the state government had failed to give three acres of land to dalits as promised in the TRS election manifesto. He also said that the government didn't allow the all-party delegation to call on the suicide victims.

Later, Congress leaders Bhatti Vikramarka, D Sridhar Babu, Mallu Ravi, V Hanumantha Rao, Gajjala Kantham and Indira Shobhan admitted Nerella victims in the NIMS hospital for better treatment.

The Congress leaders visited the hospital and urged the doctors to give them high quality medical treatment.
