Lok Satta Party (LSP) Working President DVVS Varma on Tuesday appealed to the government to go the rescue of the rain- ravaged farmers in coastal Andhra.
Quoting reports that crops in 6-7 lakh acres have been damaged in rains in the last few days, Varma suggested that the government should announce a package of assistance to the affected, a majority of whom are tenant farmers.
The government should make arrangements for purchase of discolored paddy and conversion of rain-soaked paddy into boiled rice. Banks should be asked to reschedule crop loans.
Party vice-president YD Rama Rao appealed to his party workers to instill confidence in affected farmers and draw the government's assistance to their plight.
Meanwhile, the party announced that its president Jayaprakash Narayan will take part in a farmers' conference at Sindhanoor in Karnataka on November 3rd.
Party spokesman Katari Srinivasa Rao said a large number of paddy and cotton growers would be taking part in the conference.
The conference is part of a nation-wide movement to unite farmers. The conference organizers believe that farmers have to mount a long-term and sustained battle for agriculture liberalization.
