Centre's Tribunal For AP-Telangana Water Disputes Soon
The Union government will set up an apex tribunal to permanently resolve the allocation of the Krishna waters between the four Southern States.
Hyderabad | 18th December 2016
In a major development, the Centre announced its decision to set up an apex tribunal in order to permanently resolve the issue of the sharing of the Krishna waters between Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka. All other tribunals will come under this permanent commission, and will be in effect soon.
According to information, the Centre also decided to appoint a retired Supreme Court Judge as the chairman of the Tribunal. The new Tribunal, with full autonomy, would take a final call on water allocation, usage and sharing among the four States. An amendment bill is likely to be introduced in the next Parliament session.
The two Telugu States are at loggerheads for quite sometime over the sharing of the allocated waters, and the controversies surrounding them never seem to die out. Although the Krishna Water Board and the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal had given their respective verdicts from time to time, the two States were never satisfied, and recently planned on moving SC to seek their "rightful" share of the Krishna river waters.
The new Tribunal will hopefully solve the issue amicably
