Be Alert For Possible Floods: Ponnala
The Meteorological Department has warned that the state, would receive moderate to heavy rains because of a low pressure area created in the Bay of Bengal.
With many districts in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region receiving copious rains under the influence of low pressure area in Bay of Bengal, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah on Saturday convened a high-level meeting with his officials at the Secretariat to review the flood situation in the state.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, the minister stated that all reservoirs and dams in the state were receiving inflows due to copious rains received at the upper areas.
He asked the irrigation officials to review the situation on hourly basis and discharge the waters by lifting crest gates to avoid floods and to check damage to crops and property.
He said that 90,000 cusecs of water was discharged from the Almatti reservoir based on the inflow. The Srisailam dam was receiving 70 TMC of water from the upper region, he added.
A decision on releasing of water to Nagarjuna Sagar Dam will be taken after conducting a review meeting with irrigation officials, he stated.
Earlier, the minister directed the officials to streamline the release of water from the canals to avoid flash floods and check damage to crops and property.
As the Kadem irrigation project on Godavari river in Adilabad district receiving massive flood waters, the irrigation engineers lifted 14 crest gates to release 1.5 lakh cusecs of water.
Due to heavy rains in Karnataka, the water level in Tungabhadra reservoir touched 1618 feet and the inflow of water in the dam is 70,137 cusecs.
The officials at Jurala Dam released a 3 lakh cusecs of water by lifting 50 crest gates into Srisailam reservoir.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned that the state, particularly coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana would receive moderate to heavy rains under the influence of low pressure area created in the Bay of Bengal.
The Indian Airlines officials have announced cancellation of many flights due to bad weather. The officials cancelled all flights starting from Kolkata to Chennai via Visakhapatnam due to bad weather and rescheduled some flights.
