The state government on Monday announced that is has formulated the new Bar Licensing Policy in compliance with the Excise Department guidelines.
The government will permit the setting up of bars in Municipalities, Corporations and towns depending on the size of population.
According to the guidelines, an area with a population of 50,000 should permit only one bar per every 10,000 people.
Municipalities and Corporations with populations of 3 lakhs each should permit only one bar per every 30,000 people; those with populations between 3 lakhs to 7 lakhs should permit only one bar per every 20,000 people; and those with populations of more than 7 lakh should permit only one bar per every 12,000 people.
Areas with population between 50,000 and 7 lakh will be permitted one bar per every 15,000 people; and areas with more than 7 lakh people will be permitted one bar for every 16,000 people.
The population count would be based on the 2001 census.
The new Bar Licensing Policy also states that every 3 star hotel can open a bar, irrespective of the population.
Government will also inspect the permission given for bars and retail belt shops by them during the 2009 financial year.
