26/11-accused Ajmal Kasab has been sentenced to death by the special court in Mumbai, on 4 counts. He also faces a penalty of life imprisonment on 5 counts.
Judge M L Tahiliyani presided over the landmark hearing in the special anti-terror court in Mumbai today, and heard the arguments by Kasab's lawyer K P Pawar and Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikam.
Though the
judgement was made on Monday, the actual sentence was postponed to Thursday, thanks to a strike by motormen in Mumbai, that delayed the judge's stenographer.
According to the judge, Kasab is a "menace to society" and "does not have the right to live". Kasab reportedly broke down after the judgement was passed.
Kasab is now the 309th death row convict awaiting death in India, and joins the ranks of Afzal Guru, the prime accused in the 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament.
