The by-election for the Palair Assembly seat in the Khammam district of Telangana today registered 85.48% voting as against 90% in the last election.
The polling was held in a peaceful manner. The voters waited patiently in polling queues since the morning, and the polling officials allowed them to exercise their franchise.
There are four mandals in the Palair Assembly constituency including Thirumalayapalem, Koosumanchi and Khammam Rural, and the officials set up 248 polling booths. The polling started at 7 am but the voters stood in queues since 6 am itself.
The Election Commission allowed the voters to cast their votes till 6 pm keeping the high temperatures in mind.
Thummala Nageswara Rao from the TRS, Ramreddy Sucharitha Reddy from the Congress and Pothineni Sudharshan Rao from the CPM were in the fray. The TDP and YSRCP extended their support to the Congress candidate in the election.
The result will be announced on May 19.
The election was necessitated due to the demise of the sitting MLA Ramreddy Venkat Reddy.
