Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar today announced plans for grand celebrations and special events at 97 RTC depots and 341 bus stations across the State tomorrow to commemorate the milestone of 200 crore women availing themselves of free travel on RTC buses under the Mahalakshmi scheme, amounting to travel worth Rs 6,700 crore.
Prabhakar described this achievement as a significant moment in the history of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC), and recommended that celebrations be held at every depot and major bus station, with local officials - including MPs, ministers, MLAs, Mayors and other dignitaries - invited to take part in the events.
"Employees, teachers, students, businesswomen, women travelling for advanced medical care in urban hospitals, and pilgrims should be encouraged to share their travel experiences during the celebrations. In addition, the top five drivers and conductors, along with traffic guides and security personnel from each depot who have contributed significantly to the success of this initiative, should be honoured," he said.
"Free bus travel to women has been effectively implemented since December 9, 2023, shortly after the Congress government assumed office under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The government continues to reimburse the Corporation for the expenses incurred under this scheme," he added.
