Civil Supplies Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao on Thursday revealed that the Centre will start issuing Unique ID cards first from Andhra Pradesh.
Talking to media persons, Krishna Rao said that around 3.5 crore people in the state would be issued the Unique Identity Cards first, and the people in the rest of the country would be issued the cards later. A high-powered committee will be appointed to oversee the distribution of the ID cards and it will be set a deadline of 6 months.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was set up by the Centre to give a unique number to each citizen of the country.
Nandan Nilekhani, one of the founders of Infosys, has been chosen to head the massive project which is set to help the government in terms of providing not only security, but also help in welfare schemes for all citizens.
