The state government, bowing to the intense pressure by Telangana protagonists, decided, on Friday, to lift all police cases filed against students and others who participated in the Telangana and United Andhra agitations.
The decision to lift 790 cases filed against 3,567 students will provide immense relief to the protestors.
According to sources, a statement will be issued in this connection within a week.
All the police cases that have been filed against the students before the constitution of the Srikrishna Commission, will be lifted.
The government's decision will see that cases are lifted against students who damaged public property during agitation. However, the has government decided not to lift cases against those who caused damage to private property.
The government is yet to take a decision on lifting cases against those who resorted to violence in the agitation.
In these cases, it is eliciting the opinion of legal experts before taking any decision. Both Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and Director General of Police K Aravinda Rao were consulted in this regard.
The government's decision was hailed by all political parties and students union leaders.
However, Telangana JAC and Seemandhra JAC leaders demanded that all the cases, including those registered for damaging private properties, should be lifted.
