About 40 lawyers from the Telangana region boycotted work and staged protests on Tuesday, in front of the High Court, demanding 42% reservation for people from the Telangana region, in judiciary posts.
The lawyers demanded that a clarification be issued on their demands of a region-wise quota in the recruitments to the posts of Public Prosecutor and Standing Committee.
The lawyers' other demand is the immediate replacement of the Assistant Government Pleader, who has been in the post since the past 6 years. The protesting lawyers say that the Pleader should be replaced by someone from the Telangana region.
Rumblings among the lawyers over the demand had been felt on Monday, with 3 of them boycotting work. Their protest gathered steam on Tuesday, when they were joined by their colleagues.
The protesting lawyers warned that the protest will gather further strength in the days to come if their demands were not met. As news of the boycott spread, lawyers from other Courts reached the High Court and announced their support to the protest.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Charminar, arrived on the scene and instructed his subordinates to ensure tight security to avert any untoward incident.
The impromptu protest by the lawyers resulted in the traffic on the roads around the Court premises going haywire, leading to huge traffic jams.
