Liquor sales in Telangana once again reached record levels due to the just-concluded Dasara festival.
Within 10 days of the festival, nearly Rs 1,000 crore worth of liquor was sold in the State.
Sales in bars and liquor shops as well as in pubs saw a huge increase, and resulted in huge revenue from liquor sales to the exchequer.
Officials concluded that most of the the huge sales took place in Hyderabad itself. The sales doubled on Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday being the day of the festival and Sunday being a holiday.
According to the officials of the prohibition & excise department, there are 2,260 liquor shops and 1,171 bars and restaurants in the State. Apart from this, sale of liquor happens in pubs as well. The sale of liquor in the State is very high during Dasara every year. This time, too, the excise department kept huge stocks of liquor with it in advance with the same assessment. Huge stocks were also kept in bars and liquor shops.
The sales started even before the start of Dasara, and the State exchequer earned a windfall in a short time. The sales stood at Rs 2,838.92 crore this calendar year until September 30, 2024, but as many as 10.44 lakh cases of liquor worth Rs 1,057.42 crore were sold just between October 1 and 11. Similarly, 17.59 lakh cases of beer were also sold. Ranga Reddy district topped the list in sales, followed by Karimnagar, Nalgonda and Warangal districts.
